ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE IN LITTLE VENICE

ABOUT ME...

I discovered Alexander Technique through my voice teacher in 1997. I was the singer in a band and had become frustrated with the increasing fragility of my voice. My voice teacher, on the other hand, was frustrated by me. I had established a reputation for erratic progress in our lessons. It seemed the more I tried to follow his instructions (don't raise the tongue, don't let my shoulders fall forward etc.) the more out of breath I became and the worse I sounded.
One day he told me about an Alexander Technique teacher that had been hired at the local acting school. I knew after my first lesson that Alexander Technique was for me because it was a way to examine what my voice teacher had been helpless to solve. That is, what was happening to my poise and breath when I opened my mouth to sing. My voice teacher knew a lot about what I needed to do to produce the sound that he wanted to hear. But he had been powerless to stop my habit of interfering with my own vocal production.
Since that first lesson I have had a lot of fun trying to figure out what it is that I am doing. I continued in my band until 2001 when I began studying for a masters degree in computer science at the University of North Carolina. After completing my degree, I began my Alexander Technique training program at the Constructive Teaching Centre in Holland Park London, where I trained under the direction of Walter and Dilys Carrington. I qualified in December of 2005, and I currently teach in London.
